Located on a major axis of the former town center of Massy, the plot already houses several buildings, including a residential unit, a barn, and two large hangars. These structures, reminiscent of the town’s agricultural past, are arranged around a protected cobbled courtyard along the property’s boundary lines.

As our project is part of the renovation of the town center, special attention has been given to integrating the development into its urban context, which remains deeply influenced by its historical rural functions. Now visible from Marx Dormoy Street through a newly opened porch, the cobbled courtyard becomes an integral part of the urban sequence. While the existing architecture is of interest, the true character of the site lies in its courtyard. This is why we have sought from the outset to enhance it, restoring its historical role as a shared communal space. Continuing the restored cobblestone paving, a mineral treatment guides residents to the entrances of the new housing units, which are positioned within the footprint of the former hangars.

Aiming to create a sense of generosity, comfort, and privacy, we have separated the dwellings with private gardens. Some of these gardens are accessible from the ground floor, while others are located on the upper level, revealing the restored limestone boundary wall— a unifying element of the project.

The site’s strong mineral character has led us to select hand-molded terracotta bricks, in tones that closely match those of the region’s local quarries.
